World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitispas has had a very bad last couple of months in terms of results, and his form has dipped considerably. The Greek star replaced his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, who had been coaching him since he was 12 years old, with new Australian coach Mark Philippoussis. The fans were growing impatient about the star’s seriousness at several tournaments, fearing that his father was not the right man for the job.
After Stef took this sharp call deciding to give his father some rest from coaching, he was asked by a fan on Reddit whether he wished to phase away from his father after the string of bad results in the last few months. The fan questioned, “Are you going to gradually phase out of being coached by your father?” Stefanos reacted very emotionally to this question bringing out the fact of how much impact his dad has made in his tennis.
Furthermore, he also made it clear that he wouldn’t have made it this big and to this level if it weren’t for him. At last, he wanted his fans to be respectful towards his dad and assure the world that he would never part ways with him.
Stefanos replied, “My father has been a great foundation for my tennis and personal balance in life. All he deserves is respect and appreciation for the work that he has put in. He will never stop being by my side.”
What did Stefanos have to say after he relieved his father of the coaching duties?
After Stefanos decided to reunite with Mark Philippoussis just months after parting ways with the Aussie, the news left his father absolutely shocked and stranded. Way back in June, Philippoussis confirmed that he would no longer be working with Tsitsipas, having worked together for a couple of months. After replacing his father, who had been coaching him for quite some time, he explained his reasons behind the decision.
He said, “My father right now, I gave him some time off. He hasn’t had time off since I’m 12 years old. I think for him, it’s very healthy to take some time away from the court and feel refreshed again. Parents can get emotional sometimes, and I completely understand that.“
Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added, “I’m not a parent myself, but I can imagine how difficult it can be at times seeing your child give it their all and to be going through so much during a match. I love him and I want him to be part of that journey that we have built together.”
