Julia Apostoli, the former tennis pro is more famously known as the mother of Greek superstar Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas is one of the few players to have a one-handed backhand and is quickly rising in popularity as well.

While he is seen as the future leader of the sport, his rivalry with Australian mercurial Nick Kyrgios is quickly becoming one of the most sought on the Tour. The two last met in the 3rd round of the 2022 Wimbledon engaging in a high-tempered match where Tsitsipas ended up calling Kyrgios a ‘bully’.

Asked about her son’s season so far, Apostoli, speaking with Champion AT, said, “Could have played better, of course. Our match turned out to be very nervous with Nick Kyrgios. That is, we were practically offered to play dirty tennis there, but we don’t know how to play such tennis. Therefore, Styopa lost his temper and left the court without getting there.

“The only person, perhaps, who brings him into a state of complete confusion is Nick Kyrgios. And there are some things in sports that cannot be ignored. That is, 100 years have passed since the Olympic movement existed. And for 100 years, no one has encroached on it.

“And only Nick decided: the rules for him are not the rules. And even more so in tennis. Tennis is a very stiff sport,” added the Greek superstar’s mother calling out the controversial Australian star who finished runner-up at Wimbledon after beating Tsitsipas.

With Kyrgios one of the most intimidating opponent to come across, Tsitsipas had no response to Kyrgios’ mind games during their match at the All-England Club this year. Kyrgios would go on to defeat the Greek in 4-sets in what was one of the most heated matches of the tournament.

With the win in Wimbledon, Kyrgios now leads Tsitsipas 4-1 in their head-to-head. While the two hinted at letting go of their differences and enmity between them, one can’t be entirely sure about how things could go the next time the two players meet.
