Stefanos Tsitsipas opens up on his ambition to become World No. 1 after losing the chance to achieve it this year following the loss to Novak Djokovic

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas came to Turin with high hopes and two goals in mind. First, To win the ATP Finals title for the second time in his career. Second, To take the World No.1 spot in the ATP Rankings.

Although, the first dream is still alive the second one has all but shattered. To become the World No.1 and to overtake Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Rankings, Tsitsipas had to win the tournament too convincingly. This means he had to beat everybody he play against in the Group stage, semi-finals, and the Final in the quest to win the title.

But yesterday’s loss has dimmed his chances of ending the year as World No.1. However, he remained solemn during the post-match conference. He admitted that the rankings had occupied his mind and he will become No.1 someday but right now he wants to focus on playing good tennis.

I deeply believe that I can reach that spot one day. I’m not really that much in a rush, to be honest. Of course, it would have been better if it happened this week,” he said.

If I was to play good tennis this week, win all of my matches, for sure I deserve the spot. It shows good performance, it shows consistency. But, look, it’s not really occupying too much of my mind. I’m kind of excited that I get the opportunity to do something this week that can give me a record, a personal record, and a milestone,” he added further.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz will be relieved that one possibility that could topple him of his World No.1 spot is removed. However, if Rafael Nadal could win the ATP Finals title for the first time in his career, then too Alcaraz can lose his top rank.

After losing the first match, against Novak Djokovic, the sky looks gloomy for Stefanos Tsitsipas. He needs to play great tennis, from here on to advance into the next round. He will be playing against Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. He needs to win against both of them to advance into the semi-finals.

Of course, it helps a lot to start the tournament with a win, because then you get two more opportunities instead of starting with a loss and having to pick up later on,” he said introspecting his chances.

But the 2019 ATP Finals winner is looking to forget yesterday’s loss. He just wants to concentrate on the way ahead.

But I’m looking on the bright side of things. I’m happy being here. If the wins come, I’ll be obviously happier, much more motivated to keep on going. But most importantly I’m enjoying my tennis this week. It’s my number one priority,” he said positively.

The next two matches are very crucial for Stefanos Tsitsipas. It can make or break his chances in this tournament.
