Stefanos Tsitsipas had managed to reach another final of the season as he cruised his way to the finals of the Astana Open but lost to the 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets. It was his sixth appearance in the finals of the ATP tournaments of the year but was denied his third title win of the year by the Serb who had earlier defeated him in the finals of the Italian Open.

Tsitsipas’s mother Julia Apostoli shed light on the rivalry between her son and Daniil Medvedev where she believes that it is not as legendary as that between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. She said “Nadal and Federer did not have such a conflict. No offense will be said, but Roger and Nadal were the ideals of tennis in their time. Not yet ready to say that Medvedev and Tsitsipas are ideal players. There is room to grow.

She further added that ” I don’t think there’s anything special. I don’t think there’s anything special. Daniel is such a person by nature: if he doesn’t like something, he won’t keep it to himself for a long time. He expresses his opinion on many things. Tsitsipas is more of an introvert, although it’s hard to tell from him. He had to become an extrovert by virtue of his profession. He has no such negative feelings towards anyone.

Tsitsipas and Medvedev‘s rivalry has been the talk of the town where the two have played 10 times against each other and the Russian leads their head-to-head 7-3. Their last encounter was at the Australian Open in 2022 where Medvedev defeated the Greek player in 4-sets.

Julia further stated about the environment Tsitsipas grew up in and being clear of his limitations. She said “Tsitsipas still grew up in a sports family. His grandfather is an Olympic football champion. And there are some things in sports that cannot be ignored.

She further talked about the new generation and their approach to the game as she doesn’t wish to offend anyone. She stated that “I think the referee would have walked over them a couple of times. I don’t want to offend Medvedev now and everything would fall into place right away. And that’s not bad. They are all personalities, but when any personality gets into a crazy frenzy, it is very difficult to keep one’s negative qualities and humanly everyone has them under control. And then just you see what a person is worth, what he really is. This is my deep conviction.
