“Stefi did it by 30 what she did by 40!” Serena Williams’ ‘GOAT’ claim debated on social media as she bids adieu to tennis after losing at the US Open

Serena Williams
23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams hung her boots and said an emotional goodbye to the sport she dearly loves on Friday night at the US Open. In the third round, she lost to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in three sets 5-7,7-6(4),1-6. A few weeks earlier, she announced that she would retire from tennis after the US Open because of her age and priority change in life.
Serena is one of the most decorated tennis players of all time and is widely debated to be the greatest tennis player of all time given the impact she has had on the sport. She is the first breakthrough black tennis player and changed the way in which women’s sport was played. She has won 73 singles titles in her career which includes 7 Australian Open Titles, 3 French Open Titles, 7 Wimbledon Titles, and 6 US Open Titles.
Taking everything into consideration, Serena is definitely amongst the greatest tennis players of all time- male or female but whether she is the ‘greatest’ is still debatable. Serena has won the second most major titles in tennis- just one behind Margaret Court and has won major titles in three different decades. While Stefi Graff, one of the all-time greats is just one major behind Serena.
Tennis Twitter get into a heated GOAT debate after Serena Williams’ retirement

While numbers may not be the sole reason to determine the GOAT status, Serena has pretty good numbers as compared to the likes of Steffi Graf but it is also to be considered that Graff retired at the age of 30 with 22 majors while Serena retired at 40 with 23. Fans on social media once again instigated the GOAT debate and called Steffi a better player than Serena.
