Tribute to Grant Wahl at the FIFA World Cup, Martina Navratilova
Martina Navratilova has once again come forward in making sure baseless stories are not picked up. With the whole globe currently enjoying the 2022 FIFA World Cup which is in its final week, the tournament was marred by a tragedy a couple of days ago.
Famous American sports journalist Grant Wahl passed away in Qatar at the World Cup. Gahl was quite popular and reputed in the USA but made global headlines when he sported a ‘Rainbow’ shirt. With Doha not recognizing the LGBTQ community, Wahl’s action was praised by many across the world as he mustered the courage to take the risk of showing his support to the LGBTQ community.
Wahl did not face any punishment and was let go by the Qatari officials. Amidst this, his sudden passing came as a shock to many when the news broke out on 10th December. While many suspected foul play on the Qatari government’s side, a different angle was picked up by people believing that due to Wahl getting vaccinated against Covid-19, it lead to his death as a consequence of the highly debated vaccine.
After many days of speculations, Wahl’s wife, Dr. Céline Gounder, cleared the air around the whole subject. “No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him. His death was unrelated to COVID. His death was unrelated to vaccination status. There was nothing nefarious about his death,” said Gounder as reported by AP.
Navratilova used it as a means to debunk all the false theories about the passing of the departed soul. Taking to her Twitter handle, she said, “Another stupid conspiracy bites the dust!” while attaching the link to Gounder’s statements as per AP.
Grant Wahl was paid a fitting tribute by FIFA at the World Cup
Wahl had collapsed during covering the quarter-final clash between Netherlands and Argentina. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, they could not revive him and he passed away on Saturday. As tributes poured in for him across the world, FIFA also made their best possible efforts to show respect to Wahl.
Ahead of the quarter-final clash between England and France, Wahl’s photo was displayed on the big screen in the stadium. On what would have been his seat for the match, FIFA placed a photo of Wahl with flowers in his memory.
“Tonight we pay tribute to Grant Wahl at his assigned seat in Al Bayt Stadium. He should have been here. Our thoughts remain with his wife Céline, his family, and his friends at this most difficult time,” read a statement issued by FIFA. A FIFA official near Wahl’s seat said, “It was the least we could do.” The official Twitter handle of the US Football Association also shared their message.
While other investigations might continue to happen as per the law and order, it has been made clear that Wahl’s death was not associated with his vaccination status. Despite a difficult time, Wahl’s wife confirming the news is enough proof for the subject and the discussion can be brought to an end.
