The former U.S. Open winner, Dominic Thiem, gave a strange reason for his defeat in the first round against Andrey Rublev. Earlier today, the wildcard entry was defeated by the fifth seed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. He was nowhere near his best during the match and lost it in just over two hours.

Speaking in the post-match interview, Thiem explained what happened to him during the match. It was a completely strange reason coming from a former Grand Slam champion, even though he didn’t start the match as a favorite.

Fans and experts expressed their thoughts on social media, saying they had never heard such reasons before. However, Thiem was satisfied with his performance and said the timing of the sun was not the best, but it was what it was.

The Austrian said “The sun was – I was in a tough position to serve, so I completely changed the toss and something happened after at the abs or at the ribs. It’s just a little inflammation or a little strain … Obviously not the best timing and in the middle of the second set, but it is what it is.”

Dominic Thiem reflects on his performance in the first round

Going into this first-round match in the Australian Open, everyone knew that it was not going to be easy for Thiem. However, he has experience playing against big players in the past, winning a Grand Slam final against Alexander Zverev. But right from the first set, he was behind and could never recover. Rublev played some beautiful shots and dominated throughout the match.

Thiem was grounded enough in the press conference and said “But honestly, I don’t think that even at 100% I’d be able to beat Rublev yet, he is top-five seed here – even in a really fit situation. It would be very, very tough to beat him and with the issue like the abs, it’s going to be almost impossible.”

Thiem is however confident that he can return to his 2020 form back as his game keeps improving from time to time. The Austrian further added saying “In the beginning, it was way tougher than I expected. Also, I was playing way worse than I was expecting, so it was a tough way back.”
