The six-time Wimbledon champion thinks that the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and the British Government must budge on the question of allowing Russian and Belarusian players for the 2023 edition of Wimbledon. She wants Russian and Belarusian players to play in the tournament. She feels it is necessary for the sport and the event.

Also, Billie Jean King believes that allowing the Russian and Belarusian players will allow ranking points to be reinstated for the competition. Last year, ATP and WTA decided to remove the ranking points provision for the Championships. Hence, the winners- Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina, were awarded no ranking points for their triumphs.

Although the Serb managed to make it to the Top 10, despite not playing in two majors and a host of other tournaments in the USA because of ambiguity about his status against Covid-19, the Kazakh player lost the chance to breach into the Top 10.

“I hope they do (rescind it), just keep it the same way the other ones are. Life is too short. It’s the ranking points, for sure. They have to have them. Rybakina, they’ve seeded her 25th, but because she won Wimbledon, she’s not (where she should be),” Billie Jean King said during a WTA event in January.

Following her incredible performance in the Australian Open 2023, Elena Rybakina is currently ranked as World No.10 in the latest WTA rankings. She reached the final of the Australian Open 2023.

Meanwhile, the British Government and the British Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have not made any comments on whether they will allow Russian and Belarusian players for this year’s Wimbledon or not. However, the speculations are ripe that the British Government may change its decision and allow players from Russia and Belarus to play at Wimbledon and other tennis tournaments this year.
