“If he hates 250s so much why did he enter 9 of them this year” – Taylor Fritz bashed by fans after his latest comment on the ATP-250 AND 500 events

American tennis player Taylor Fritz recently proposed the idea of an elite tour only for the top players of the sport that will consist of the Grand Slam events, Masters 1000s and ATP Finals. With these comments, the 26-year-old has pushed himself into controversy and many fans are angry at Fritz for undermining the smaller tournaments like ATP 500s and 250s.
It’s a really good idea, and I think that we should have separate tours. If you’re on the main, top tour, you should be set to play all the big events, and they should all be slightly bigger-draw events to get basically everybody in the top 100 in, and I think that’s honestly all we should play.Taylor Fritz via The Sydney Morning Herald

In his statement, Fritz provided a very detailed description of the model that he’s proposing. He said there could be 14 main tournaments that the top players take part in and it would also make it easier for the fans to follow the sport.
The problem with the 250s and 500s, according to Taylor Fritz, is that there is a fear in the players that if they miss those tournaments, the other players might earn points in between the big events, which impacts the rankings.
You can have 14 marquee events, and it makes tennis easy to follow for fans because all you have to pay attention to is those tournaments. There’s no people getting tons of points in between events, at like 250s and 500s, and more than anything, there’s no crazy schedule for us players.
Fans react to Taylor Fritz’s comments on the ATP 250s and ATP 500s
Many fans felt it hypocritical of Taylor Fritz after his comments on the ATP 250s and the ATP 500s. The American himself took part in as many as nine (which was later rectified to be 8) ATP 250s just in 2023.
The fans said that if he was so against the small tournaments, he should not take part in them. In fact, the only two trophies that he won in 2023, i.e, the Atlanta Open and the Delray Beach, are both ATP 250s.

However, Fritz has cleared that up in his statement itself, where he mentioned that if he does not participate in them currently, there are other players who might get a ton of points in between the big events. Check out some of the reactions that the fans made post the American’s latest comments.
Some fans also pointed out the flaw in Fritz’s proposed system and said that it will further increase the financial gulf and the gap in general between the small and big players. It would also be bad for the promotion of the sport in general if the major tournaments were played only in the four Grand Slam nations, Canada and China.
