The American tennis player Taylor Fritz faces heavy criticism owing to the idea he suggested. The major viewpoint of his vision was to have a premium Elite Tour for top players consisting of Grand Slams, Masters 1000s, and ATP Finals. This idea has been heavily criticized among the fans and the pundits for not being considerate of the other players.
However, with a post on his Twitter handle, Fritz has opened up about what he exactly meant. The American also explained what his ideologies are behind suggesting this idea.
Always need a follow-up explanation for the people that can't read. When I say separate or premium tour, I am not saying only top players, as I said in the quote the "main top four" should be made up of the top 100-200 players kind of like how top 125 PGA get a tour card and at the end of the year some people go down and some people come into the main tour.Fritz wrote on X
As per the US Open quarterfinalist himself, such a system would ensure that no player could earn their ranking points from elsewhere. This is because everyone would get to play the same number of tournaments.
Fritz added that this was just his honest opinion. Moreover, this change would pave the way to making the system much easier to understand.
Taylor Fritz bashed up by fans after his proposal of a marquee premium tour
Fritz’s idea of a marquee tour consisting of the top players has raised huge criticism against him. Fans have been bashing Fritz for undermining the smaller tournaments like ATP 500s and 250s.
Moreover, the fans have identified the hypocrisy of Fritz, as he had participated in eight such tournaments. The two trophies that he won in 2023 are both ATP 250s, i.e., the Atlanta Open and Delray Beach.
The chief of the Australian Open, Craig Tiley, had also suggested the idea of having a premium Tour. Tiley also urged the ATP and WTA to collaborate for the same.
However, such a system would lead to a very unequal financial system for the players, as the big players would have much more money and the other players would earn much less. Moreover, this system will lead to the ultimate stoppage of small tours.
