After a successful 2021 season, hopes were riding high for the Italian sensation Jannik Sinner. He won 4 ATP singles titles and earned World No.10 spot in the ATP rankings in 2021. At the age of 21, is considered the next big thing in tennis coming from Italy. He started the year 2022 as World No.10. However, the 2022 season was a mixed season for him.
The 21-year-old could not do much at the Grand Slams and the ATP tournaments played around the year. He won the 2022 Croatia Open. This is his only triumph at the ATP tournament this year. The drop in his performances affected not just him but also his fans. As a result, L’Equipe, a French newspaper, declared Jannik Sinner as the ‘most disappointing tennis player of the year’.
Sports psychologist Daria Abramowicz raised her concern and shared the news on social media.
“Ideas like this one are disappointing. Why would they even publish that kind of “rankings”?” her caption read. Former American tennis legend Chris Evert agreed with Daria’s views.
“Agree…. I have a pit in my stomach when i read negatively like this…Can we just move on ???” she replied to the controversial list issued by L’Equipe.
Social media too agree with Chris Evert’s views on this issue
Besides Jannik Sinner, French tennis players Gael Monfils and Ugo Humbert have also been named on the list of ‘most disappointing tennis players of the year’. L’Equipe has also ranked Emma Raducanu and 4-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on the list. World No.80 could not do much this season and also had to miss tournaments due to injuries.
The Former World No.1 also had to miss out due to injuries and lack of form. Meanwhile, many social media users are commenting on the above post. They agree with Chris Evert and believe that such rankings should never be published. Here are a few reactions coming in.
Monfils is currently ranked World No.52 in the ATP rankings. He started well his season by winning the first ATP tournament of the year, i.e., the Adelaide International 1 tournament 2022. However, after winning this competition, he had to struggle against injuries throughout this season.
He finished his 2022 season after losing to Jack Draper in the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open. Humbert is currently ranked World No.24 in the ATP rankings. He too like Monfils had a difficult season. The 24-year-old could not win a single ATP title. He also failed to defend his 2021 Halle Open title.
