Rafael Nadal has excelled since the beginning of the year, winning the singles titles in the 2022 Australian Open and 2022 French Open back-to-back. With his 22 Grand Slam victories, he established a record for the most singles Grand Slam victories during the Open era. However, he had a significant barrier at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship when he was forced to quit from the competition after suffering an abdominal ailment in the quarterfinals against Taylor Fritz.
The possibility of Nadal completing a calendar Grand Slam was destroyed when he opted to withdraw from the competition due to his injury. Nick Krygios reached his first solo Grand Slam final as a result of his withdrawal right before the semifinal game. The 23-time singles Grand Slam champion was scheduled to return to the court after his Wimbledon exit by competing in the ATP 1000 Masters tournament in Montreal before the US Open, which begins on August 29.
Nadal, however, announced his withdrawal from the ATP event in Montreal on Twitter. He revealed that he had to make this decision after his doctors advised him to do so keeping in mind about US Open.
Twitter goes into meltdown as Rafael Nadal withdraws from Montreal
He said “I have been practicing for a while now without serving and started with serves four days ago. Everything has been going well. However, yesterday, after my normal practice, I felt a slight bother on my abdominal and today it was still there. After speaking with my doctor, we prefer to take things in a conservative way and give a few more days before starting to compete. We have decided not to travel to Montreal and continue with the training sessions without forcing ourselves. I sincerely thank the tournament director, Eugene and his entire team for the understanding and support they have always shown me and today was no exception.“
