Newly crowned World No.1 Daniil Medvedev had a brilliant chance to ascend to the top with a title to his name but it was not meant to be for the Russian. Playing against World No. 205 Tim van Rijthoven in the finals of the 2022 Libema Open in Tim’s backyard in the s’ Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.

Tim won the match 6-4, 6-1 in just 65 minutes and could have well dropped a bagel on the top seed in the second set but Medvedev managed to hold his serve to win at least one game in the second set before the 25-year old Dutchman closed out the match on his serve to win his first-ever ATP title in his first-ever ATP tournament. The title saw Tim rise 99 places from World No. 205 to World No. 106 in one of the biggest jumps in the season so far for a player.

Medvedev wasn’t the only Tour giant that was tamed down by Tim. On his way to the title, Tim defeated Matthew Ebden, Taylor Fritz, Hugo Gaston and Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the finals where he then took down the Russian who was the favourite going into the match. The brilliance of Tim won the hearts on the internet while Medvedev faced quite some trolling for losing to a player who was ranked 203 places behind him.
