A legend of the game, Roger Federer made the whole tennis world weep when he decided to hang up his racquets for the final time last year at the Laver Cup. Unfortunately, he lost his last match, but the amount of reception and love he received from the fans was unmatched, and very few players in the sport might match the number of fans he possesses.

Having returned as a guest at the 2023 Laver Cup, he shared how beautiful the moment was for him last year thereby marking the farewell as the most beautiful and perfect one. While being interviewed by Jim Courier, the host during the on-court event, Federer said, “It’s a really intense, beautiful life I’m living now. It’s great to be back at the Laver Cup one year later and if I look back at the memories, I thought the farewell was beautiful.”

He added, “It was perfect, it was emotional. There was proper suffering going on throughout my talk with you. I was always dreading the moment for years … I was just worried my end was somehow going to be not nice and it was the opposite, it was great. I felt really good about it and very happy … something I was very lucky to experience.”

How did Roger Federer’s last match pan out for him?

After more than two decades of intensive and enthralling tennis, it was time to bid one of the greatest tennis stars a final goodbye, and the stadium was completely packed with fans traveling from all parts of the world to watch the Swiss legend play for one last time on the court. Federer had the chance to play by the side of his longtime rival and friend, Rafael Nadal, which summed up one of the greatest moments in the history of the sport. 

Federer and Nadal were up against the challenging duo of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. With Team Europe leading by the score of 2-1 with wins from Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud, the greats of the sport paired up with each other to increase their lead on Team World in what was the last match of Day 1. Despite winning the first set comfortably, Sock and Tiafoe stunned the experienced duo to force a wonderful comeback winning by a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.
