Matteo Berrettini, Roger Federer
Matteo Berrettini recently revealed that he is a big fan of former Swiss tennis player Roger Federer. The 20-time Major champion bid adieu to the sport last year, after playing his last professional match at the Laver Cup. Roger Federer is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all-time, with a career spanning across three decades.
Matteo Berrettini stated that Roger Federer’s retirement last year was a very emotional moment. The Italian was present at the Laver Cup, where he represented Team Europe. The Swiss’ last professional match was a Doubles encounter alongside his good friend and former rival, Rafael Nadal. Although it ended in a loss, yet it was certainly a moment worth savoring for all fans present inside the stadium.
“I am a fan of Federer. I was there when he retired, it was crazy. Everyone cried,” said Berrettini. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist played two Doubles matches at the Laver Cup, teaming up with Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.

Matteo Berrettini describes facing Roger Federer for the first time in his career
Matteo Berrettini and Roger Federer have locked horns against each other on two occasions, both in 2019. The duo first met in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2019, where Roger Federer completely bamboozled the Italian. He won the match in straight sets, dropping just five games. He went to reach the finals of the Wimbledon that year, falling to Novak Djokovic in one of the most memorable matches in the last couple of years.
“I faced him twice: the first time I didn’t understand sh**. I asked myself ‘what am I doing here?’, I was supporting him. The second time I fought harder, but I lost,” Berrettini said.
Their second meeting came just a couple of months later at the Nitto ATP Finals in London. Although Matteo Berrettini put on a much convincing performance, yet it was nowhere close to beating Roger Federer. The 20-time Grand Slam champion reigned supreme once again in two sets. Their much-anticipated fourth round encounter at the 2021 French Open never quite materialized, as Roger Federer had to withdraw from the tournament after his victory in the third round.
