“The hardest thing for me is… “- Carlos Alcaraz reveals what can stop him from winning the Wimbledon title
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz, the fifth seed at Wimbledon revealed what is the hardest thing for him to do on the grass, more precisely, what stands between him and the Wimbledon title. The Murcian, who competes for the second time at Wimbledon, starts his tournament against the German Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday and passed this Sunday by press conference as one of the favourites.
“I try not to think about people’s expectations,” said Alcaraz in his pre-tournament conference, who has won two Masters 1,000 (Miami and Madrid) and two ATP 500 (Rio and Godó) this season. “People want me to always win and they don’t think beyond that. When you lose it’s a disappointment to people, not to me. Every tournament I go to I play for myself, I play for my people, for my closest people. As long as it doesn’t disappoint them is another story. I try to set people’s expectations aside,” he added.
“I try to copy myself from the best, Rafa, Roger, Novak”- Carlos Alcaraz
Due to discomfort that forced him to leave Queen’s, Carlos Alcaraz trained this week at Wimbledon with an elbow guard. “I’m feeling pretty good, it’s been a positive week. The elbow has respected me quite well. No discomfort. We are adapting to the grass, to play with the protection of the elbow, which I had never played with. At the moment I’m doing pretty well. The important thing is that I’m playing without thinking about the elbow. We are 100% prepared,” he said.
Alcaraz was only able to participate in two exhibition matches at Hurlingham due to elbow issues, both of which ended in two-set losses. The transition from clay to grass is the hardest on the circuit and Alcaraz spoke of the adaptation he has had to make. In his words, “The hardest thing for me is to move on the grass. Personally in the grass, it is difficult to start, when they make you a left when they move you to the side. That first quick step costs me, I’m working on it. I try to copy myself from the best, Rafa, Roger, Novak, Andy, who for me are the best in terms of movements.”
