Andy Murray

Former World No. 1 and 3-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray is one of the greatest tennis players to represent the UK in tennis. Murray’s win in the 2013 Wimbledon Championships made him the first British man after 1936 to win their home Grand Slam title and his rise to World No. 1 in 2016 was another historic achievement for the nation who had been waiting for a stalwart to lead their nation and inspire the future generations.

Murray is one of the most candid and honest players on the Tour and has never shied away from speaking his heart out on any sensitive issue. The Brit has often called out the media for their snarky remarks on players and has also been the true example of a feminist having made the correct statements when issues of those matters have come up.

“Why do women still have to put up with that s—?”: Andy Murray

One such issue where Murray’s rational approach and rational thinking came to light was the 2018 Ballon D’or ceremony, a prestigious night in the world of football where the French Magazine ‘France Football’ recognises the best players of the season and over the years, the award has become one of the most prized possession in the sport of football.

During the 2018 ceremony, French DJ and musician Martin Solveig was hosting the event and after Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg was adjudged the Women’s Player of the Year, Martin asked Ada if she knew how to perform the ‘twerk’ dance move on the stage. While Ada remained cool at the moment puzzled by the question, Martin faced a lot of criticism on the internet and Murray did not hold back from speaking about the same.

“Another example of the ridiculous sexism that still exists in sport. Why do women still have to put up with that s—? What questions did they ask [best men’s under-21 player Kylian] Mbappe and [best men’s player Luka] Modric? I’d imagine something about football. And to everyone who thinks people are overreacting and it was just a joke… I’ve been involved in sport my whole life and the level of sexism is unreal,” said Murray via his Instagram story.

Murray grew up under the initial coaching of his mother Judy Murray and then hired former Grand Slam champion and World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo as his coach for a spell of two years being the only Top-50 men’s player to have a female head coach. Murray credits the two women for making him understand the issues of sexism better and the Brit has not put a foot down on these issues.
