Daniil Medvedev suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Australian Open 2023. The two-time Australian Open finalist was completely outplayed by the American youngster, who ousted him in straight sets. The Russian was billed among the top favorites to claim the title in Melbourne, after missing out on the coveted prize by the barest of margins last time around.

Daniil Medvedev revealed that he was suffering from a weird pain, which kept him from serving well throughout the match. The former world number one stated that he had no clue about the source of the pain, but believes it could from his wrist or forearm. Sebastian Korda held his nerve in crucial junctures of the match, as he won two sets in the tiebreaker.

Daniil Medvedev refused to use his minor injury scare as an excuse for his loss against the American. “Today I felt some pain in my wrist or forearm. The serve was bothering me a bit. It’s not easy because I don’t know where it came from. We were working on it a lot before the match, but it didn’t go away. Definitely nothing serious, otherwise, I couldn’t play,” said Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev had a pretty ordinary 2022 season, where he failed to win a single Major title. After being within touching distance of the Australian Open 2022 title, he choked under pressure against a resurgent Rafael Nadal. The US Open 2021 champion also faced fourth round exits from the French and US Open 2022.

Seeded seventh at the Australian Open 2023, this seemed like a great opportunity for Daniil Medvedev to claim his second Grand Slam title. Carlos Alcaraz had announced his withdrawal owing to an injury, whereas, Rafael Nadal was knocked out only in the second round. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic’s recurrent hamstring issue still continue to be an area of concern.

Daniil Medvedev will look to bounce back stronger in the coming few months, after an early exit from the Australian Open 2023. The 26-year-old will be desperate to add some consistency in terms of his results, given that his performances have been pretty topsy-turvy in the past year.
