“There’s a lot to come” ‘Baby Federer’ Grigor Dimitrov continues to back himself to win a Grand Slam title
Grigor Dimitrov
Former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov has been one of the unluckiest players to miss out on a Grand Slam title despite being one of the most talented players on the Tour. A winner of the Year-End Championships in 2017 and having clinched 8 titles on the Tour, the 31-year-old Bulgarian has reached the semi-finals of all Slams except the French Open where he is yet to move past the 4th round as Clay has troubled him quite a lot.
Dimitrov is a former World No. 1 Junior having clinched the 2008 Wimbledon and 2008 US Open boys singles title and by winning the 2013 Stockholm Open, he became the first Bulgarian man to win a Tour title. He is also one of the only 6 men to win the ATP Finals on debut and his achievements have already made him the most successful Bulgarian tennis player of all time. With his arsenal of shots having a striking resemblance to that of Roger Federer, he was labelled ‘Baby Federer’ when he was bursting on the scene.
“I’ve been on the circuit for 13 years which shows a certain consistency”: Grigor Dimitrov
Dimitrov last played at the 2022 Queen’s Club Championships where he suffered a second-round defeat at the hands of Botic Van De Zandschulp despite having defeated last year’s runner-up and British No. 1 Cameron Norrie in the first round. Following the defeat, Grigor talked of his ambition to win a major and presented his view on why he thinks he can still win the biggest prize in the sport.
“Yes, I still think I can win a Grand Slam. I believed it several times. In the last Grand Slam tournaments, I got good results. Now, unfortunately, I have to face very, very good players in the second or third round. However, I still think there is a lot to come. I think I can keep playing and maintain this level.
“Who knows when and where it might happen? We know how unpredictable everything can get, how everything can change from week to week, I’ve been on the circuit for 13 years, which shows a certain consistency, I would say,” said Dimitrov, in comments reported by WeloveTennis. Dimitrov currently holds the distinction of having the longest active streak of Grand Slam appearances having made 45 consecutive appearances in majors.
