“They just have a sick obsession of tearing me down” Nick Kyrgios expresses his disappointment on being ‘outcasted’ and never given any support from former Australian Pros

World No. 40 Nick Kyrgios‘ wait for reaching the finals of a Grand Slam event has finally come to an end as he is 3-sets away from winning the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Although he did play in the finals of the 2022 Australian Open Doubles and went on to win as well, the finals in Wimbledon will be the first time he is in contention to win a singles major event.
In his run to the finals, Nick won two matches in 5-sets, two matches in straight-sets and a 4-set win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in a highly controversial match. He was supposed to take on Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals but the Spaniard tore one of his abdominal muscles up to 7 millimetres and had to withdraw prior to his match. The withdrawal saw Nick enter the finals where he will take on 3-time defending champion and the top seed Novak Djokovic.
“It’s hard for me to read things they say about me”: Nick Kyrgios

While Djokovic had a topsy turvy ride to the finals, he has also paid $14,000 in fines for his on-court antics. Nick is no stranger to paying fines and it has resulted in him being named the ‘Modern bad boy of Tennis’ and often leads to him being criticised by the fans, media and former players. While Nick has dealt with media and fans, he feels disappointed when former Australian players like Pat Cash and Mark Philippoussis don’t lend him any support or backing at the tournaments.
‘It’s pretty sad because I don’t get any support from any of the other Australian tennis players. Not the current players, but like the past greats. It’s weird they just have like a sick obsession with tearing me down for some reason. I’m definitely the outcast of the Australian players. The greats of Australian tennis, they haven’t always been the nicest to me personally. They haven’t always been supportive. They haven’t been supportive these past two weeks, so it’s hard for me to read things they say about me.
‘When I saw Ash Barty in the final of the Australian Open, I was nothing but happy. I would never say a bad word about an Australian making a final. That’s just me. I just don’t know whether they don’t like me or they’re, like, afraid. I don’t know what it is, but it sucks, because if it was roles reversed, if I saw Alex de Minaur in a final, or Jordan Thompson or Thanasi (Kokkinakis), I’d be pumped. I’d be stoked. I’d be having a pint watching going nuts,” said Kyrgios in comments reported by DailyMail UK.
