Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils

Constant Lestienne, recently, achieved a career-best rank to be at the 105th spot in the ATP singles rankings. He generally participates in the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Men’s Circuit tournaments. He has won five ATP Challenger Tour singles titles to his name. In addition, he has also won five singles titles and three doubles titles in the ITF Men’s Circuit. He was once found guilty of illegal gambling of tennis matches and was suspended for seven months with a fine of $10,000.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon, and Richard Gasquet have been good friends on and off the court. Their camaraderie started way back in the year 2005. They all together form one of the best teams in the Davis Cup, they even won the tour in 2017 without Monfils as he had to miss due to injuries. They have been able to defeat Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal in some of the tournaments but never at the Grand Slam events. The four Frenchmen are yet a Grand Slam while the Big-3 have dominated their presence at the Grand Slam tournaments with a total of 63 Grand Slam titles among the three.

“It’s a fantastic generation” Constant Lestienne on his compatriots

Constant Lestienne and Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon

Lestienne, recently in an interview, praised Tsonga, Monfils, Simon, and Gasquet and considers them an amazing set of players even though they haven’t won a Grand Slam title. He said,” People don’t realize how ‘golden’ this generation was, how good they all were. We had four or five players in the top 20, it won’t happen tomorrow. I know them all and they are fantastic people. They are great guys with amazing careers. People have always criticized them because they think they should have won five Grand Slams each. They did their best, they were just a bit unlucky. I wish I could shut their mouths.”

He believes that they performed their best always but somehow was not enough considering the gameplay of the three legends. He further added “They did their best, they were just a bit unlucky. Gilles told me that, to win a big tournament, you always had to beat Federer in the quarter-finals, Nadal in the semi-finals, and Djokovic in the final, to give you an example. Honestly, it’s a fantastic generation. There is nothing more to say. They simply ran into three aliens (Federer Nadal and Djokovic). And look at Richard, for example, he still plays tennis and has been on the tour for over 20 years. He’s a tennis freak.

Tsonga announced his retirement after the French Open 2022 whereas Gilles, Monfils, and Gasquet are still playing but have not been able to achieve the level of consistency with their game at the major events.
