Serena Williams, the 23-time women’s singles Grand Slam champion and former World number 1 shook the world with her announcement of her return to the court during the 2022 Wimbledon Championship after a gap of twelve months. She looked strong in her play but lost in the first round to Harmony Tan in a thrilling and action-filled match of three hours.
Williams started her tennis career about two decades ago as a teenager and hasn’t stopped till today. She has been a fierce player and has been proving her dominance in the sport time and again as she has won every possible trophy in the sport. She along with her sister Venus Williams is the most recent player to have simultaneously held all four major women’s doubles titles in the year 2009-2010.
Williams has been facing a lot of criticism starting from her outfit selection at tournaments to her playing style and even her shot selections. She has also been questioned regarding her stamina and physique often being compared to that of a man funnily accusing the player of being a male in a sport of women’s.

In the year 2015, Williams was criticized for her gameplay being totally different than the rest of the WTA players and also claimed that her build was different from others giving her an undue advantage at times and it is not fair to the others. Martina Navratilova, a 9-time Wimbledon champion and former world number one, is one of the greatest players of all time who has been always vocal about her stand against social issues. Navratilova’s playing style was quite similar to Serena’s and both of them have always dominated their matches with strong and powerful serves.
The Czech-American player shared a post on her social media account on Twitter bashing the people who questioned Williams on her physique and claiming their allegations were correct against the player. In support of the American player, she wrote “Sorry but who are the losers trying to put down Serena Williams for her body? Serena is an amazing athlete and tennis player. The End.“
After her exit at Wimbledon, the American will be participating at the National Bank Open in Toronto where she begins her preparation for the upcoming and final Grand Slam event of the year, the US Open 2022.
