Toni Nadal full of praise for ‘Great champion’ Novak Djokovic after winning his 4th consecutive Wimbledon title

Uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal, Toni Nadal also joined in on celebrating Novak Djokovic‘s brilliant triumph at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Djokovic was up against first-time Grand Slam finalist Nick Kyrgios in the finals and went on to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) in 3 hours and 1 minute.
The win over Kyrgios was Novak’s 21st career Grand Slam title, his 7th Wimbledon title and his 4th title at the Grand Slam on the trot with his winning streak extending to 28 matches at the Grand Slam with the Serb yet to lose on Center Court since 2013, a stamp of his authority at the Grand Slam where he is now tied with Pete Sampras as the second-most decorated champion in the Open Era.
“Novak Djokovic continues to pursue Rafael Nadal”: Toni Nadal

The Wimbledon title takes Djokovic closer to Rafael Nadal‘s all-time tally of 22 majors. Djokovic and Nadal were the top seeds and a likely showdown in the finals was expected but with Rafa having a tear in his abdominal muscle, he withdrew before his semi-finals against Kyrgios. With the race for most majors heating up once again, Toni was nothing but excited like all tennis fans.
“Novak Djokovic, without the need to display his most dazzling game, once again proved that he is a great champion. Everything that his opponent was not willing to do, is just what he normally does. He is a serious player, who always shows the best mentality to face the most unfavourable moments.
“As I mentioned [before the match], we knew that he would not fail. The only chance for him to lose his chance to win his 21st Grand Slam was if Kyrgios had the ability to play his best tennis and, above all, surprised us with his temperament to keep it up all the time. With this latest victory at Wimbledon, the Serbian continues to enhance his sports image and pursue Rafael in the race to be the greatest winner of all time,” wrote Toni in his column for El Pais.
