Former tennis player Martina Navratilova once again gives headway to controversy as she calls trans women, men who identify as women. However, this is not the first time the American has taken a public forum to voice out her opinions on the issue. She has been called ‘transphobic’ numerous times by the public for her comments on the participation of trans women in sporting events for women.
This time, the tennis legend has resorted to Twitter to voice out her opinions. She tweeted, “Trans women are males who now identify as a woman. Fixed it for you.” That tweet once again sparked controversy in the 18-time Grand Slam champion’s name. Navratilova has always been loud in voicing her opinions with regard to such issues. However, her thoughts on the inclusion of trans women in women’s sports have always created controversy among the public.
The American started sparking controversy when she called for World Aquatics to create a new open category for transgender athletes, following the participation of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in the women’s category. These comments by Navratilova were taken with a pinch of salt by the audience. She was faced with accusations of transphobia by people.
She was even dropped by an LGBTQ nonprofit, athlete ally, following her ‘transphobic’ comments. When Navratilova called trans women in women’s sports “cheats” she was immediately cut loose by athletes ally. However, this did not seem to stop the American from speaking out her mind on the issue. She still continues to defend her point of view that trans women should not be allowed to compete in the women’s category. She instead proposed an open category for transgender athletes to participate in.

This is not the first time Navratilova has talked on the issue
The American tennis legend started questioning the participation of transgender women as early as 2019. She sparked controversy when she called transgender women, ‘men who identify as women’. She was also a staunch believer of the fact that a transgender woman is just a woman in a man’s body and they should not be allowed to participate in events for cisgender women.
However, Navratilova often stresses the fact that she was not a transphobe. She has many times established that she was not against people living their lives as they want to be. However, she seems to be opposed to the idea of trans women participating in women’s categories.
While some people seem to agree with the American, there is a large number of people who are completely against her opinions. American transgender swimmer Lia Thomas called Navratilova a transphobe if she was a feminist. However, the former tennis player seems to disagree with this notion.
