Iga Swiatek lost the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The award’s decision was heavily criticized by tennis fans. They voiced that World No.1 did not get the due appreciation for her achievements.
The Laureus World Sports Awards are held annually for honoring athletes and recognizing outstanding sporting triumphs. The Gala welcomed outstanding performers from various sports all across the world. From the tennis field, Carlos Alcaraz was presented with the ‘Breakthrough of the Year Award’ for his terrific performance last year.
The WTA World No.1 was nominated for the second time but lost the award to the Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The 35 years-old sprinter became the oldest to win a gold medal at the World Championship, under the women’s 100 meters category.
On the other hand, many argued that the Polish player had bigger achievements last year. She claimed eight WTA singles titles and two Grand Slams trophies at Roland Garros and the US Open. The two-time French Open champion also set the record of 37 match winning streak and ended the year as World No.1.
The tennis world voiced their discontentment as they felt that the 21 years-old was robbed because of her nationality. Fans added that with her record of achievements, it was not justified to not be acknowledged.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Swiatek successfully defended her Stuttgart Open title after defeating Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. She also reached the finals of the Madrid Open but fell short of the sensational performance of the World No.2, Sabalenka.
Iga Swiatek eager to claim another title at the Italian Open
Iga Swiatek will be appearing as the defending champion at the Rome Open. The Polish player who has won the title back-to-back, will be looking forward to extending her record on the clay surface.
The World No.1 first won the Italian Open in 2021, after her easy win over Karolina Pliskova. Last year, she defeated Ons Jabeur to secure her second consecutive win at the championship. With her ‘aggressive’ game style and ‘perfect command’ of the clay surface, she possesses huge trouble for the competitors.
However, the competition is going to be tough with the Top 20 WTA players eyeing to claim the title. Swiatek will definitely be facing challenges from Aryna Sablenka, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Caroline Garcia, and Coco Gauff. The tour will indeed prepare the players for the coming battle at the Roland Garros.
