Aryna Sabalenka claimed her 13th career title, as she defeated Iga Swiatek in the Madrid Open finals on Saturday. The Belarusian held her nerve when it mattered the most, as she claimed the title in a three-set encounter. She avenged her defeat from the 2023 Stuttgart Open finals, when Iga Swiatek clearly outplayed her for a straight sets victory.

Aryna Sabalenka started the match on the front foot, winning the first set by a score-line of 6-3. The second set went in the favor of Iga Swiatek, who entered as the favorite in the final set. However, the 2023 Australian Open champion put her best foot forward in the final set, as she claimed her second Madrid Open title.

Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are arguably two of the most in-form players on the circuit. The former has been a consistent performer on the tour this season, winning the Australian and the Madrid Open. The Belarusian also finished as the runner-up at the Indian Wells and the Stuttgart Open.

Fans were quick to pour their thoughts on the outcome of the Madrid Open final. There were also accusations of biases towards Aryna Sabalenka, who was given an advantage due to the scheduling of her matches. Iga Swiatek played a couple of matches in the night session, which limited her recovery time.

The two competitors will return to action at the 2023 Italian Open. The duo clashed in the semifinals of the Italian Open last year, where Iga Swiatek outplayed the Belarusian in straight sets. Given their current form and dominance on clay courts, it would not be surprising to see the two clash against each other in the finals in Rome.
