The Wimbledon Championships is around the corner and two-time champion Andy Murray is handed a tricky draw. This will be the Scottish star’s 15th appearance at the All-England’s Club, which starts on July 3. He won the title here in 2013 and 2016.
Murray has expressed his desire to keep playing to end his career on his own terms, despite playing with a metal hip after that career-threatening hip injury. He will be entering the prestigious tournament following a first-round loss to Alex de Minaur in straight sets at the recently-concluded Queen’s Club Championships.
This year, although the former world number one couldn’t win a tour-level title, he did reach the Qatar Open final only to lose to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. He would then win the Challenger Aix-en-Provence by beating Tommy Paul. The two-time Wimbledon champion then won back-to-back titles in two Challenger-level tournaments in the buildup to his campaign at SW19. He defeated Jurji Rodionov in straight sets in the Surbiton Trophy final, followed by a win over Arthur Cazaux in straight sets in Nottingham.
Andy Murray can possibly face these opponents after first-round win
Andy Murray has avoided seeding after his first-round loss to Alex de Minaur at the Queen’s, and so at the SW19, he will play the first round against compatriot and 267th-ranked Ryan Peniston. This will also be Murray’s only second match against a fellow Brit as he faced Liam Broady in 2016 en route to lifting the trophy.
If Murray beats Peniston, then things will only become tougher for him, as he will either face world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas or former US Open champion Dominic Thiem after their encounter in the first round.
In the third round, the 36-year-old will be meeting either Shelton or Cressy, followed by his encounter against Cameron Norrie or Sebastian Korda. Needless to say, Murray, despite his brilliant run at the Challengers tournaments, will be finding it quite difficult to progress into the quarterfinals.
But if he advances to the last eight, Daniil Medvedev or Paul will be waiting to meet him. Then Murray can meet Carlos Alcaraz or Holger Rune in the semifinals, before a possible final against Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, or Andrey Rublev.
