In a recent interview with Ubitennis, the executive director of the Ukrainian Tennis Federation, Evgeniy Zukin, had high praise for Iga Swiatek, the Polish tennis player who spoke out against the sanctions imposed on Russian players. Swiatek has been a vocal advocate for maintaining a sense of normalcy in the world of tennis, even in the midst of ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Zukin expressed his gratitude for Swiatek and others like her who are willing to speak up about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. He noted that while many players might not be aware of or interested in the situation, those who come from countries close to Ukraine have a more intimate understanding of the issues at hand. Swiatek, who hails from neighboring Poland, is one such player.

“Of course, if there was an agreement within the players’ council or their environment to prevent Russian players from playing during the war, that would help a lot. But unfortunately, people like Iga Swiatek or Petra Kvitova are in the minority and not in the majority. It is truly unfortunate that no one cares enough about what is happening.” he said.

Zukin argued that a unified stance on the issue could help to send a message to the world that the conflict in Ukraine is not something that should be normalized or ignored. While the actions of individual players like Swiatek and Petra Kvitova (another player who has spoken out about the situation) are commendable, they alone cannot bring about change. It is up to the tennis community as a whole to take a stand and show their support for Ukraine.
