‘Unprofessional from my side and I regret it’ Andrey Rublev apologizes for his brain fade moment during his first-round match at the French Open
Andrey Rublev
Despite winning his opening-round match at the 2022 French Open, Andrey Rublev is under the negative spotlight for his on-court antics. Rublev defeated Soonwoo Kwon in four sets 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to secure a second-round spot but after losing the opening set, the Russian lost his cool.
Rublev smashed the ball in frustration after losing the first set which clipped the court sweeper’s cap and could’ve easily hit his face. He then smashed his racquet multiple times until it was broken. For doing all this, he just received a mere warning and fans are fuming over the same.
Later in the press conference, Rublev addressed the issue and said that he had a lot of emotions inside him and he failed to control them given the tension building up throughout the first set. He explained the build-up to the situation and that it wasn’t just a momentary thing.
“Yeah, the first set, as I said, I was quite tight, and I had a lot of emotions inside of me. And I tried to really control them. Tried to understand the situation. Be positive. And I was able to do this because there were so many games in the first set. I was Love-30, breakpoints, doing sometimes some stupid mistakes, and I was able to be quiet and just be positive. Basically till the end of the first set,” he said.
‘I will never do it again’: Andrey Rublev
Rublev admitted his mistake and said that he regrets what he did and called his actions ‘unacceptable’. He realized that the ball could’ve hit anyone and that was wrong on his part. He vowed to never repeat such a thing again.
“Then, yes, I lost my mind for a moment, and of course, I regret what I did. It’s unacceptable to hit the way the ball I hit it. It’s more, I don’t know, better even if I just hit the racquet on the seat, because the ball can affect — I mean, it’s not about me. It can affect someone. That’s when the problem comes. This is unprofessional from my side, and hopefully, I will never do it again,” he said.
Rublev will now face Federico Delbonis in the second round on Thursday.
