“Stayed focused from the beginning”- Unstoppable Carlos Alcaraz sets up Alexander Zverev clash at French Open after easing past Karen Khachanov
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz continues to win matches, the most recent of which he won 6-1 6-4 6-4 against Karen Khachanov.
This was a match between players of two different levels, and it was evident from the start that Khachanov would not be able to keep up with Alcaraz, who was clearly motivated to play tennis. The Spaniard broke early and never looked back, winning the first set 6-1. In that set, he scored 12 wins to Khachanov’s two, as the Russian battled with his serve.
If his serve is not a factor that’s a pretty hard job for the Russian. He probably would have preferred to play this match during the day in better conditions, but that did not happen. Khachanov performed considerably better in the second set, but Alcaraz was still superior. He hit more winners and made fewer errors, but his serve did not play a significant role in the match.
“I started aggressive and dominated the match”- Carlos Alcaraz
The score was 6-4, and Alcaraz was on his way to his first quarterfinal at the French Open. He broke early in the third set as well, but Khachanov battled back to tie the match at 3-3. Khachanov had some chances because the Spaniard was not as sharp as before. To add insult to injury, he wrecked them by gifting Alcaraz a breakpoint, which he converted with a tweener lob on the breakpoint. That was the final set and match essentially as Alcaraz eased to a 6-4 finish to move to his maiden French Open quarterfinal.
In his on-court interview, Carlos Alcaraz said, “It was a great match. I had to stay focused from the beginning to the end. I started aggressive, dominated the match and tried to keep my level through the match.”
Alcaraz talked about advancing to the net on a frequent basis, he said, “I am a player who likes the drop shots and volleys. My style is to be aggressive, so I try to go to the net as many times as I can. I like the people talking about you, knowing you. It is pressure, but I try to get that pressure as motivation. I like to play in the biggest stadiums in front of a lot of people.”
