Rafael Nadal sailed through to the Round of 16 after a comfortable win against Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-0,6-1,7-5 in the third round of the US Open. With this win, he stands at a 22-0 win-loss record at the Grand Slam events this year. He moved into the fourth round for the 12th time in his career and will likely end up as the world number one if he is able to win the US Open title, his third title in a year.

He looked out of place at the start of his second-round clash against Fabio Fognini where he was one set down in the start but slowly got back his momentum even the weird accident of hitting his nose with his own racquet could not deter him away. The Spaniard has had phenomenal performances this year as he became the singles champion at the Australian Open followed by the win at the French Open as well which took his number of major titles to 22.

Frances Tiafoe grabbed his place in the Round of 16 after defeating Diego Schwartzman in straight sets in the third round, Marcos Giron in the second round, and Jason Kubler in the first round. He had a fair run at the hard-court tournaments that are the build-up to the US Open as he reached the semi-finals at the Atlanta Open and the quarter-finals at the Citi Open.

On the other hand, Tiafoe is yet to drop a set and is playing good tennis but he needs to up his game by a notch higher against the Spaniard. With Nadal’s serves being a concern, Tiafoe will look to get a hold of his nerves on that factor.
