The Italian took the opening set with remarkable ease and, with a few minor stumbles, was in command of the game. Wawrinka then improved his game to win the second set and tie the match. Sinner blew an early lead in the third set but rebounded in time to win the match and deny a resurgent Swiss a comeback. Sinner had taken complete control of the fourth set by this point, so it wasn’t as competitive. He broke Wawrinka’s serve twice and won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, in Zverev’s case, the first few sets were split evenly between the two players, with each player coming out on top in the tie-break. While the first two sets took a total of two and a half hours to decide, the next two sets flew by. Zverev won the match 6-7 (2), 7-6 (8), 6-1, 6-1, dropping only one game in each of them.

Zverev leads Sinner 3-1 in the head-to-head. The German won their previous encounter at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters in three sets. The 12th seed has been in good form since he recovered from his injuries.

He has won 70% of his first serves and has blasted 15 aces. Sinner emerged victorious against tennis veteran Wawrinka but also made 61 unforced errors. The 22-year-old will have to buckle up in order to face the German. In 2021, Sinner and Zverev fought against each other in the same fourth round of the US Open as this time. The Italians lost that match. Zeverev remains unfazed by his young opponent and might outplay him again.

Match Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in four sets
