Sinner earned a straight-set victory over Yannick Hanfmann to advance to the second round of the US Open. He then battled his compatriot, Lorenzo Sonego. The Italians totally dominated the match. He had a 3-1 lead in the first set and held onto this lead to conquer the set. He broke Sonego’s serve twice to claim the second set. The third deciding set also saw the young player use a single break of serve to his advantage and clinch the third set to win 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka defeated Yoshihito Nishioka to advance to the second round. He then faced 30th-ranked Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The former Grand Slam champion struggled in the first set but eventually came out on top in the tie-break. The Swiss had a set point in the second set but lost in the tiebreak. He then made a great comeback where he outplayed his opponent. He won the match 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 6-3,6-2.
