A recent post by the official Twitter handle of the US Open has caused outrage in the tennis community. They have tweeted a collage that takes a dig at Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and has been accused of being biased towards Novak Djokovic.
The post consists of a picture of Federer and Nadal being emotional and shedding tears at the retirement of the Swiss maestro at the Laver Cup. The first picture is juxtaposed with the second picture, which contains Djokovic playing the saxophone. The picture is captioned as:
A good saxophone solo never misses.
As expected, the post has been criticized for using a genuine, heartfelt picture of the Swiss and Spanish duo that played Federer’s last match as doubles partners. It uses a completely unrelated photo of Djokovic playing the saxophone at a concert in Belgrade. The picture has been accused of misrepresenting “the big three’s” relationship and being heavily in favor of World No. 1.
There are always discussions as to who is the ultimate GOAT (greatest of all time) in tennis, with the trio’s names coming at the top for completion. The post is probably referring to the emergence of the Serbian ace as a 24-time Grand Slam title winner since he won the US Open. The three of them have often been pitted against each other.
However, after the current world no. 1 won his 24th title, he created history by becoming the first male tennis player to win so many Grand Slam titles. Some believed that this achievement put the GOAT debate to rest as long-term rivals Federer and Nadal have 20 and 22 Grand Slam titles, respectively.
Tennis fans outraged by US Open’s Twitter post
The post has been heavily criticized, with many considering it disrespectful and in poor taste. People feel it is a misrepresentation of the big three’s relationship and unfairly favors the current US Open champion.
This post seems to be taking an indirect dig at the debate by claiming the 36-year-old to be the victorious one while the other two keep lamenting. Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
The global followers are criticizing the tweet’s aim and taste. They are left wondering whether this was a simple oversight or a blatant display of bias.
