Alex Eala, the 2022 US Open Girls’ champion is slowly coming into the limelight of the tennis world. After playing in the qualifiers, she recently reached the main draw of the WTA-250 Thailand Open. The 17-year-old from the Philippines is also a scholar in the Spaniard’s Rafa Nadal Academy. Due to this, she had been fortunate enough to get close to Rafael Nadal and follow the tennis great’s work ethic.

Eala has shared the best of the advice received from the 22-time Grand Slam Champion in a recent interview. She said, “Well, he said multiple times to surround yourself with good people, and being on the tour and traveling so much since I was at such a young age, I believe that that’s really an important guideline, I would say. To be surrounded by good people and to learn good habits“.

Continuing the train of thought, Eala described how the work ethic of the Spaniard has inspired her, “He doesn’t need to directly talk to you to give you advice. It’s just so many times, there are so many things that you can learn just by observing. Just by observing how he is on and off the court, how he’s humble, his work ethic, and his attention to detail.” (source: PhilStar)

17-year-old Alex Eala raised young spirits when she won the US Open juniors title. She defeated World No. 3 Lucie Havlickova, 6-2, 6-4 in the final to seal the title. She became the first Filipino to win a singles grand slam title in tennis. The young star is now focusing on accelerating her professional career.

She said after her win, “It’s a huge milestone in my career. I have bigger goals I want to achieve and I’m trying to take them step by step. I’m focusing more on my professional career… I can’t say I’m done with juniors for sure, but I’d be focusing more on my professional tournaments.”

She also spoke about the long-term goals set following the footsteps of Rafael Nadal,For [my] long-term goals, to win a grand slam, join the Olympics, maybe medal, or you know, be World No. 1. Just a couple. There’s a lot of things that I want to do, hopefully“.

The 17-year-old has a long way to go to reach higher heights and the tennis world hopes to see her shine as per the expectations.
