The 2022 WTA Finals is around the corner with 8 of the best female tennis players of the season competing for one last time for tennis supremacy before going on a multiple-week break before the next season. Iga Swiatek will lead the playing field along with the likes of Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina, and Maria Sakkari.

But even before the tournament started, it has already received a lot of criticism for its prize money. A few days ago, the ATP announced record-breaking prize money for the 2022 ATP Finals. The undefeated champion of the ATP Finals this year will take home a mammoth $4740300 while the undefeated champion of the WTA Finals will win $1680000.

This huge prize money gap raises many questions about the disparity between men’s and women’s games. Here the total prize money in the ATP Finals is almost thrice that compared to the WTA Finals.

Defending champion Garbine Muguruza hasn’t qualified for the WTA Finals this year and hence will drop all the points from last year. Swiatek, who has won over 10000 points this year will go in as the favorite. She has won 8 titles this season and is having the best WTA season since Serena Williams‘ 2013 season.

Tennis fans on social media have strongly pointed out the huge prize money difference and have condemned it. It is also put to light that the WTA Finals in 2019 offered prize money of around $4.4 million to the champion, Ash Barty. So it is a disgrace to the sport that 3 years later, the prize money has been deducted by 1/3rd despite the event being moved to the USA.
