In the first-round encounter of the US Open 2023 between Donna Vekic and Sachia Vickery, the crowd was not fully packed, but the two tennis stars pulled off an absolute gem of a battle. Vekic started the match in fine fashion, winning the first set and putting her opponent under great pressure. Vickery pulled off an absolute shocker in the next two sets to eventually win the match.

However, more interestingly, the main highlight of the match was when Vekic complained to the match umpire about the loudness of a fan during the match. While some players during the first two days have had their complaints about the smell of weed in the crowds or about the slowness on the courts, Vekic had her complaints about a fan misbehaving.

She held the fan to be either insane or drunk during the course of the match. She also asked the match umpire to escort him out of the match, stating that the spectator was not fit for the ambiance. While having her drinks break between sets, she heard a loud voice, thereby complaining to the umpire, “That’s either he is drunk or insane; he shouldn’t be here.”

In a match where everyone expected the American to be the second favorite up against an experienced and much superior Donna Vekic, Vickery shocked the entire world by beating the 21st seed. Vekic won the first set pretty comfortably, giving the American absolutely no chance of dominating her. However, after the second set began, the American held her nerve to stop the Croatian on her way to a straight-set victory.

Vickery won the second set 7-5, and by the end of the third set, Vekic had no more fuel left in her tank to return the shots forced by Vickery. The match eventually ended in favor of the Americans with a scoreline of 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Vickery won 46 receiving points compared to Vekic’s 36 over the course of the entire match and progressed to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
