The Williams sisters are embarking on a new project. They have decided to become executive producers of a film based on the 1971 Women’s World Cup. This competition was organized in Mexico in 1971 by the Independent European Women’s Football Federation (FIEFF). Only 6 teams participated in this tournament, and Denmark became champions.

The new film is provisionally named as “COPA 71″ and will tell the story of women in football and their struggles during that period. Both Serena and Venus Williams are excited about the project. This is the second time both are collaborating with Westbrook Studios. Westbrook Studios also produced the movie ‘King Richard’ in 2021. It tells the story of Mr. Richard Williams, father of both Serena and Venus and his struggles to make his daughter world champions.

“When I heard about the 1971 Women’s World Cup, I couldn’t believe this incredible story was erased from our history books. I’m excited to team with my sisters and Westbrook Studios to help elevate and empower fellow female athletes and their accomplishments, and to make sure these women have their voices heard through this inspiring documentary,” Venus Williams said.

Her sister Serena Williams too is excited to become part of this project.

“’Copa 71’ tells the story of one of the most inspirational and significant moments in women’s sports history. It’s an honor to partner with my sisters and Westbrook Studios to help bring this magical story to light, which has been buried for far too long,” she said.

Both the Williams sisters are a force to reckon with on the court. Individually, they have won many tournaments and smashed many records. However, together they were almost invincible. They became the World No.1 doubles pair 2010 for the first time and since began their domination in the doubles events.

Together Serena and Venus won 14 Grand Slam titles. They also completed “non-Calendar year Grand Slam” as a doubles pair in 2009 as they won the Australian Open in 2001. The Williams sisters also won 3 gold medals in the Olympic Games held in Sydney (2000), Beijing (2008), and London (2012).

The Williams sisters’ contribution in winning the Fed Cup (now Billie Jean King Cup) in 1999 for USA is very important. They played their last match as a doubles pair at the US Open 2022. However, they were knocked out in the first round of the competition by the All-Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecka.
