Seven-time Grand Slam title winner Venus Williams was recently a speaker at the 2024 Trinity University Distinguished Speaker event. The American is currently absent from the Tour due to fitness concerns.

She had to miss the 2024 Australian Open also due to it. But as per multiple close sources around her, she is expected to return to the Tour soon. She might be targeting the Sunshine Double coming up in March with the home crowd to cheer her on. An official confirmation is yet to come, however.

At Trinity University, Williams was surprised by a young fan’s question. A nine-year-old young tennis player, Micah Williams, was in attendance and awaiting his chance to speak to the former World No. 1. Micah had been inspired to pick up the tennis racket by Venus and her baby sister, Serena Williams

Then, as a four-year-old, Micah was mightily impressed by the Williams sisters and asked his parents to help him pursue tennis. He has a 100% win record in all of his matches played across the four tournaments.

I never lost a tennis match. What should I do to get better when I lose a tennis match?
Questioned Micah to the five-time Wimbledon singles winner.

As he gets worried about his first loss, he wants some words of wisdom for Venus and she duly obliges.

First of all, wow, what a record. When you lose at some point — and if you play long enough, you will — hopefully what you’ll learn is that you just can’t wait to get back. Hopefully what you’ll learn is how much you love what you do and how much more you want to do it. I had a lot, a lot, a lot — a lot — of things go wrong before I got to be a champion.
Said Venus answering the question.

Venus Williams reveals being impressed and inspired by Serena Williams as kids

Venus, being the elder sister, turned pro first. In 1995, Serena joined her sister on the Pro Tour. Both were 14 years old when they made their professional debuts.

Venus was the first to taste the success of winning a Grand Slam title. She won the mixed doubles at the Australian Open and the French Open in 1998. The Roland Garros win came at the expense of Serena, who lost in the finals. But she did not waste time, as she won the Wimbledon and US Open titles in mixed doubles that year.

She was such a fearless player on the court and I always admired that. I was very talented … but didn’t quite have the thing in me to get past the finish line. And I knew it at a young age, … that thing she had, I wanted it.
Commented Venus about her sister.

In singles, Serena was, however, the first to win a Major title. She achieved the feat at the 1999 US Open, defeating Martina Hingis in the finals. Venus won her maiden Major at the 2000 Wimbledon, defeating Lindsay Davenport in the finals.

While Serena chose to ‘evolve’ from the sport after her third-round exit at the 2022 US Open, Venus continues to be an active player on the Tour. Although she is far from being a contender for a Major title, she still brings in the fans with every appearance she makes, just a testament to her immense popularity.
