Veronika Kudermetova became the latest Russian tennis player to be targeted by the Ukrainian Tennis Federation (UTF) after she visited a tennis academy that promotes the Russian armed forces ahead of the 2023 US Open.
According to the tweet by the UTF, they called out Veronica for visiting the tennis camp which promotes the Russian Army thereby breaking the “neutrality” policy. According to the neutrality policy, of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, a player must not pick sides in any political matters and must always stay neutral. However, Veronika had broken this policy when she visited the camp and the UTF has demanded the WTA to look into this matter.
At the time of writing, Kudermetova hasn’t commented on this accusation yet, but her visit to the camp has put her career at risk. With that being said, there is no denying the fact that athletes need to be mindful of their actions even off-court. UTF has been on a mission to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in international tournaments in response to Russia’s invasion.
Veronica Kudermetova’s future is to be decided by WTA

The Ukrainian Tennis Federation has once again got all eyes on them as they call out yet another Russian for breaking the “neutrality” policy and demand a proper judgment from the WTA. This is one of many such cases recently, as more and more Russians are being called out for breaking this policy.
The situation is reminiscent of previous controversies involving Russian and Ukrainian tennis players. It started with the case of Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk in 2021 for violating the policy. In recent times, players like Tatiana Prozorova and Miraa Andreeva have also been accused of breaking the policy. While the UTF waits for the WTA to finalize its decision, the future of these players is at risk.
With the US Open starting today (August 28, 2023), the latest updates on the controversies raise concerns about the tennis association and community. It is expected that the WTA will look into the matter and eventually make a fair decision regarding these players.
As sports continue to intersect with political matters, it becomes quite important for athletes to be extremely careful about their actions off-court. However, for now, fans have to wait and see what decision will be made by the WTA on Veronica’s case.
