Tennis world love to discuss Emma Raducanu’s fairy tale run in the 2021 US Open and her instant fall. Recently, former world number one player Victoria Azarenka also discussed the same in an exclusive interview.
The Belarusian opined that when Raducanu won the US Open, everyone latched onto her despite not knowing much about her prior to her victory. Azarenka expressed how it was sad to hear Raducanu say that she wished she had never won that trophy in New York. The 33-year-old was talking about Raducanu’s recent interview where she opened up about her mental health issues after her dream run at the season’s last Grand Slam tournament.
“I think the advice I would have given her is that you should not forget the people who drove you to that moment and who helped you to get there. From my experience, I would say she needs to have a very small circle and a very solid one,” Azarenka said on Up Front Podcast.
Azarenka appeared on the podcast post her fourth-round loss at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. She faced Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina on July 9. Both won a set each before the Ukrainian secured a hard-fought victory 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(11-9).
Emma Raducanu is currently recuperating
Emma Raducanu’s instant success and instant downfall are known in the tennis world. As a qualifier, she played in the 2021 US Open and reached the final, winning there as well. She defeated Leylah Annie Fernandez in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The wonderful thing about her campaign was that she never dropped a set.
But she couldn’t keep injuries at bay and she eventually started losing matches. Since that win, she kept changing her coaches and recently parted ways with Sebastian Sachs.
Before Sachs, she had been under the tutelage of Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, and Dmitry Tursunov. There are also discussions about whether Raducanu’s focus on tennis has been shifted due to her signing lucrative sponsorship deals.
The 20-year-old is currently recuperating from the surgeries on her hands and ankle. She last played competitive tennis at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, where Jelena Ostapenko defeated her in the first round. It’s not clear when she can make a comeback, but it seems she will miss the entire 2023 season. She is currently ranked World No. 132 in the WTA rankings and is 5-5 in the season.
