Nobody could stop Novak Djokovic as he marched on to win his career’s 10th Australian Open title and 22nd Grand Slam title. He equaled Rafael Nadal‘s record of winning the most Grand Slam singles titles. and he is hungry for more.
After the debacle and controversy regarding his visa last year, this victory is especially special. The Serb was disgracefully deported just a day before the start of the competition in January 2022. Hence, he was welcomed with open arms this time around by the Australian tennis fans.
Beside him, fans were also rooting for Nick Kyrgios. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist was the crowd favorite to win this year’s Australian Open singles title. He, along with Thanasi Kokkinakis, was also the defending champion of the Australian Open doubles event. However, he decided to bow out of the tournament just a day before the start of the first Grand Slam of the season, citing injury reasons.
Although Nick Kyrgios could not play in the Australian Open 2023, he is still touted as the “player to watch out for” in the near future by Australian tennis legend Wally Masur. He also thinks that the Australian is the only player in the young generation who can defeat the Serb.
“Yes, I think Nick Kyrgios can. When I was watching Stefanos (in the final), I just felt like you’ve got to have more ways to win points (against Djokovic) and I think Nick has more ways,” Mr. Masur stated as reported by British daily The Daily Express.

Wally Masur also has high hopes from other tennis players

The Australian tennis legend believes that there are many tennis players who can beat the current World No. 1. However, they need to get on top of their game to win against the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Along with Nick Kyrgios, he is particularly impressed with Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Frances Tiafoe.
“There are a few of those players around, but they’ve [still] got to put it together on the big stage. I’ll be interested to see what Alcaraz can do, [Jannik] Sinner is improving all the time, Frances Tiafoe – there are players I feel with enough weaponry and I think that is really the key,” Wally Masur continued.
However, he also believes that time is running out for the young generation to try and make their mark by beating the legends. Both players are ageing and on the verge of retirement. Hence, it looks like only time can beat them.
“You’ve got to have enough weaponry. I don’t want time to beat these great champions. The only thing that defeats them at the moment is time. I want the next generation to step up and beat them but it’s not proving too easy,” he added further.
