Rublev, the top seed of the tournament, cruised into the semifinals in a very comfortable manner defeating all his opponents in the previous round in straight sets. Yoshihito Nishioka elimated sixteenth seed Dan Evans in the quarter-finals in 7-6(7),4-6,7-5 in three hours and thirty-six minutes to book his place in the semifinals. The Japanese player started the tournament by beating Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and followed it up with a 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-2 win over 11th seed Alex de Minaur in the Round of 32 and seventh seed Karen Khachanov 7-6(2), 7-6(1) in the Round of 16. He had come into the tour with a 5-10 season record but after his spectacular wins, he has improved it to 9-10.

Rublev looks confident and has been in great form and will be one of the favorites to win the match. The Russian has some good experience on the hard court, having reached the quarter-finals twice in the US Open and once at the Australian Open. He will likely put pressure on his opponent from the very start with his strong forehand as he has already served 26 aces in the tournament. He needs to make sure to make fewer unforced errors while keeping his composure during the course of the match.
On the other hand, Nishioka cannot be written off since he has beaten some higher-ranked players in Washington DC.
