“Watch and then form an opinion” Novak Djokovic announces the release date for his upcoming documentary covering his 2021 season and deportation
Novak Djokovic
21-time Grand Slam champion and World No. 7 Novak Djokovic has had pole opposites seasons in 2021 and 2022. The Serbian reached the Grand Slam finals of all 4 majors in the 2021 season and also managed to reach the Bronze medal match at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics that were held in July 2021. Novak came agonisingly close to winning all 4 majors but lost in the finals of the 2021 US Open to finish the season with a 27-1 record in major events.
As for the 2022 season, things turned completely upside down as Novak was not allowed to enter Australia due to his decision to remain unvaccinated against Covid-19. Despite having the medical clearance of the Australian Medical committee, political drama saw him being deported hours prior to his first-round match at the 2022 Australian Open where he was the 3-time defending champion going for his 10th Australian Open title and 21st career Grand Slam title.
“We finished filming a month ago”: Novak Djokovic
During the 2021 Australian Open, Novak had a tear in his abdominal muscle and he still played the tournament on heavy doses of painkillers in what was a difficult fortnight for him. It was the same injury that forced Rafael Nadal to withdraw from the 2022 Wimbledon prior to his semi-final clash with Nick Kyrgios who finished runner-up to Novak in the finals later.
“At the time I recorded everything that was going on. If the purpose of your question was whether some people believed it was possible to play with this kind of injury – I can say it was extremely hard. I drank all the painkillers in the world, I went through all the therapies and all the treatments possible, and I was hooked up to machines – as I said before, you can see it all in this documentary.
“People will be able to watch and then form an opinion. Various reasons delayed the documentary, but we finished filming a month ago. It is being edited, the first part should be released after the US Open, in October or November,” said Djokovic in comments reported by WeloveTennis.
With Djokovic doubtful for the 2022 US Open as well due to reasons identical to the ones in Australia at the start of the year, the 2022 Wimbledon may have been the final Grand Slam action of the season for the Serb who has not given up hopes yet wishing for the State policy of the USA to change ahead of the Grand Slam and allow him to compete for his 4th US Open title and 22nd Grand Slam title.
