WATCH: Andre Agassi joins the Pickleball bandwagon as he hits the courts with Sam Querrey
Sam Querrey joins Andre Agassi in Pickleball training.
Former American World No.11 Sam Querrey has come up with some support for pickleball, a variation of lawn tennis, which is gaining massive popularity in the USA. Querrey posted a video of him playing the game with Andre Agassi and him giving all his support for the pickleball slam happening next month in the USA featuring John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Michael Chang.
Querrey captioned the video, “Everyone is on the pickleball train these days! Great training with the GOAT Andre Agassi.” In the video, Agassi also spoke highly about pickleball and the excitement of having Querrey’s support for the game and the upcoming tournament.
The Pickleball slam in April has prize money of $1 million. The huge investment in this upcoming game was welcomed by a part of tennis fans but on the other hand, many were of the view that these lite versions will eventually kill the traditional game of lawn tennis. The American-based pickleball league had investments from top tennis stars like Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios along with some top NBA players.
Osaka, Kyrgios, and Mardy Fish have invested in the team from Miami whereas former players including Tracy Austin, Chris Evert, Lindsay Davenport, and Gigi Fernandez have invested in the team from Chicago. Last October, Kim Clijsters also said that she will be investing in a team along with super bowl champion Tom Brady.
The gaining popularity of Pickleball
What started as moderate exercise and sport for fun for retired people, has now become an obsession with Americans. A Pickleball court is approximately the size of a badminton court. In the USA alone, around 4.8 million active pickleball players are estimated.
The tennis legends – John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Michael Chang will be playing at the Inaugural Pickleball Slam on April 2 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The event organizer David Levy opined in his speech about the pickleball slam that pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the USA.
As Levy said, “We look forward to bringing together four of America’s most iconic tennis legends for this groundbreaking competition, which heralds a new milestone for the fastest-growing sport in America. Pickleball is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon — experiencing a meteoric rise across genders, age groups, geographies, and income levels.”
