British Veteran Andy Murray has yet again stunned the tennis world with his “never give up” attitude as he dispatched Italian World No.71 Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Qatar Open after saving three match points. The final score was 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Murray had to dig deep in the 10th game of the final set where he had to hold his serve at 4-5 (15-40). He had to save one more match point in the same game before closing out the match in the tie-breaker. As seen many times in the past, Murray was clinical during the crucial moments of the match. His tactical abilities helped in overcoming the younger opponent’s physical advantages.
Tennis Twitter, as expected, went wild as Andy Murray won yet another close encounter. Tennis fans were labeling the British as “Lion-hearted“, and “Fighter” and praising the “Incredible desire to keep grinding“.

Andy Murray will face Alexander Zverev in the next round
The British superstar Andy Murray will face Alexander Zverev in the next round of the Qatar Open. During the first-round post-match interview, the Briton talked about how difficult the match was, “It was really tough. We’ve never played or practiced against each other. I didn’t know exactly how the match was going to go and took a while to get used to his game“.
“He’s (Lorenzo) a very aggressive player and takes a lot of chances, plays high-risk tennis. He rolled the dice at the end and it looked like he had the momentum then, thankfully in the mid-part of that tie-break, he made a couple of mistakes and I managed to turn it around.“
Talking about his next-round opponent, Murray said: “He (Zverev) was one of the top players in the world and had a bad injury at the French Open last year and is just coming back from that. He’s going to be improving every week just now. He’s not quite back at the level he was but injuries take time. Hopefully, I can keep building on this one“.
Alexander Zverev had got a bye in the first round. Coming to this matchup, Murray leads the head-to-head against Zverev 3-1 but their last encounter was won by the German in the Indian Wells 2021.
