Karolina Muchova is the former world number 19 was in great form at the Roland Garros 2022. She defeated Maria Sakkari, the fourth seed in straight sets in the second round. She seemed to have hit top form in her match with Sakkari after a great first-round show to defeat Carole Monnet. She faced Amanda Anisimova in the third at Sussane-Lenglen in an attempt to improve on her third-round appearance at the 2021 French Open.

Anisimova too had come off two clean straight-set victories in Paris and faced a difficult opponent in Muchova. Muchova took the first set 7-6(9-7). Anisimova was mounting a comeback in the second set, but then Muchova had a nasty fall as she twisted her ankle. After the fall she wasn’t able to win a single game. She was no match for Anisimova with the injured ankle as she lost the second set 2-6 and after being 0-3 down in the third set, threw in the towel.

Muchova was anguished and heartbroken with this situation as she tried to continue, but then with excessive pain and restricted movement, gave up and retired from the match.

It would’ve been amazing for the twenty-five-year-old Czech to beat Anisimova to advance to the fourth round, but it was not to be as Muchova would be heartbroken with an injury that saw her exit from the Grand Slam she had been playing so well. This is the second injury that has interfered with her Grand Slam, she didn’t play in the Australian Open and took her time to get back in fighting form. But all of this ended with a desolate injury.

Muchova has shown herself to be a phenomenal player but all these injuries are really piling up on her and her rankings continue to take a slide. Muchova will hope for a quick recovery and get back on the tour for grass season or at least the hard-court season and the US Open 2022.
