Danish player Clara Tauson collapsed on the ground during her Round of 16 match against Yulia Putintseva in the Guangzhou Open in China. The match was equally balanced with both the players winning a set each.
Clara Tauson won the first set in a comfortable manner, 6-3, and had to play intense tennis in the 2nd set against the Ukrainian. She lost the second set in a tiebreak. The 3rd set started with Tauson serving for a breakpoint in the very first game, when she collapsed, after which a medical team rushed to the court to assess the situation.
The alleged reason for Clara Tauson’s collapse was the intense heat and weather conditions in which the match was being played. On top of the conditions, the match went into the deciding set as well. As soon as she fell before serving, a team rushed to the scene with medical aid. Tauson was unable to move and eventually was made to sit in a wheelchair before she retired from the match also playing although playing a good and confident match so far.
A lot of people blamed China’s weather for her collapse and cramps. This is also the second time in a month that Clara Tauson has retired during a game. She has been struggling a lot physically and definitely needs some kind of break before coming back even stronger.
Clara Tauson and her never-ending injuries
Clara Tauson has had a very injury-plagued season so far. At the beginning of the year, she played in the Linz Open where she reached the quarter-finals and had an impressive run. After making it into the qualification stages, she was forced to play 5 matches over the course of 6 days which took a toll on her body leading to minor injuries.
Adding to her troubles she later got injured after the Wimbledon too. Returning to tennis after a month in the Cleveland Open, her body had not fully recovered and she was forced to retire mid-game against Leylah Fernandez. This was the second time in a month’s period that she has had to retire in such a way. A much-needed break will definitely do her good, which will also make her comeback easier and stronger.
