World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev suffered a second-round exit at the 2022 Moselle Open as World No. 284 Stan Wawrinka beat him in 3-sets. The Swiss won the match 6-4, 6-7(9), 6-3 to upset the former World No. 1 who has been highly inconsistent over the past couple of months.
Medvedev has had a poor record against French players but this time it was the crowd that got the better of him. In the third game of the third set, Wawrinka won the point to go 15-0 up in the game while already leading the set with a service hold and an early break. Medvedev tossed his racket in frustration on losing the point.
With his racket hitting the floor, boos emerged in the stadium to provoke Medvedev who was quick to react and booed the crowd while making gestures of calling them monkeys and continued booing the crowd back before pointing his finger to his brain calling provoking them further.
Fans have mixed reactions to Daniil Medvedev’s action
Medvedev would go on to lose the set 3-6 and crash out of the tournament. Medvedev was the top seed and had a bye in the first round and started his campaign directly against Wawrinka but gets an early wrap to his week in France after the defeat having saved a match point in the 2nd set.
With his reaction against the crowd going viral quickly, fans on social media gave their take on it. Some called his actions unwarranted as he was the one to first throw the racket. Many others supported Medvedev for giving it back to the rowdy crowd as they started booing and heckling him, a common occurrence on the Tour lately.
