Iga Swiatek the world number one defeated Ons Jabeur in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(7-5) to win her first singles major title at the 2022 US Open in just one hour and 51minutes of play. She totally dominated the game and wrapped up the opening sets in just 30 minutes giving less chance for Jabeur to make a comeback.
But during the second set, it took the tie-breaker for the Polish to win the championship as both upped their game and Jabeur make a comeback but that wasn’t enough against the 3-time Grand Slam champion. This is her second Grand Slam title of the year and third major title overall. With this win, she became the second female player in the Open era to win her first six sets in the Grand Slam finals.
Swiatek has a great season in the clay court season and even became the singles champion at the 2022 French Open. Post her win, she had broken her winning streaks at Wimbledon following an early round exit. She even could not her reign in the clay court season breaking her 18-match winning streak as she lost in the quarter-finals of the Poland Open.

Swiatek has been playing some great level of tennis at the US Open and looked very confident and composed in the finals. Even though, the crowd support was for her opponent, she looked focussed on her target. During the second set, she faultered at points with Jabeur leveling the set as 5-5 but Swiatek played some incredible level of tennis and bounced back into the game with a great show of resilience and athletism.
After becoming the champion, during the presentation ceremony, Swiatek received the prize money of $2.6M in the form of a cheque and the new champion gave a hilarious reaction that left everyone in splits. As she took the cheque, she instantly said “I’m really glad that it’s not in the cash.“
The young Polish became the world number one after Ashleigh Barty‘s sudden retirement from the world of tennis in January after her victory at the Australian Open. She is often regarded to have a strong hold on the clay season but with the title win, she has managed to prove her place in the hard courts as well. Swiatek has extended her lead at the top of the rankings to more than 5000 points as her tally crosses the 10,000 points mark.
